Song of Songs

A lyrical work with the poetry from Song of Songs 4:8 above a central piece: “Come  with me from Lebanon, my bride; come with me from Lebanon. Depart from the peak of Senir and Hermon, from the dens of lions, from the mountains of leopards.” And a verse below is 2:16-17 : “My beloved is mine, and I am his; he grazes among the lilies. Until the day breathes and the shadows flee, turn, my beloved, be like a gazelle or a young stag on cleft mountains.” The animals mentioned in the text are gazelle and leopard, as well as trees, flowers, and vines surrounding them. Psalm 100: A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

Mizrach with Four Animals

The central part of this rich and colourful paper-cut Mizrach is divided horizontally into two pieces. The upper one has the Tablets of the Covenant with the crown of the Torah and is supported by lions. On the scroll above is written a traditional text showing the humble state of man before God: “Know before Whom you stand, before the King, the King of Kings, the Holy One blessed be He”. (Berakhot 28b) .

The lower part contains menorah  and trees, representing the Tree of Life; the animals in both parts are lions, deer, leopards and eagles (in the border). These four animals from the famous aphorism of Judah ben Tema are all typical and traditional for European paper-cut style (see explanations in “Four Animals from Pirqei Avot”). The word Mizrach (East) in the central upper part of the border written on an intricate scroll is supplemented by four oval medallions (in the corners of the border) with four Hebrew words, for which is the acronym: “From this side is the spirit of God,” indicating the traditional direction of prayer for Jews (facing Jerusalem).

Spying Out the Land of Canaan

Inspired by the biblical story about the twelve that Moses sent to spy out the land of Canaan. The two figures in the centre of the composition represent Joshua and Kaleb, the only two faithful ones who came back with good news.

In the part above, there are traditional jewish symbols: the menorah, the crown of the kingdom, and birds that represent cherubs from the ark of the covenant. In the lower part of the composition we see seven species mentioned in Deuteronomy 8:8—”… a land of wheat and barley, of vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey,” a verse that is quoted on two scrolls, above and below the central piece in Hebrew.

A traditional composition from East European Jewish culture, who used it to indicate the direction of prayer, displaying it on the wall in the direction facing Jerusalem.

Jewish symbols are: the golden menorah from before the Holy of Holies, the star of David, the crown of the kingdom, lions and deer, and birds representing cherubs from the ark of the covenant.

The verse quoted in ovals flanking the Menorah is Psalm 16:18: “I have set the Lord continually before me.”

And your children shall return to their own territory,” which is written in Hebrew cut-out letters to the right and left of the central picture, and in English below on a styled parchment. In the centre of the composition is a group that represents the people of Israel surrounded by a vine from the left and by a menorah from the right. Above them is an outline of Jerusalem with cut-out letters in Hebrew: The Land, Zion, and Jerusalem,” which is taken from the anthem of the state of Israel.
